Navigating Psychology Internship in Delhi: Do's and Don'ts

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Embarking on the search for a psychology internship in Delhi is a pivotal step in the journey of becoming a skilled and competent psychologist. It not only provides hands-on experience but also offers an opportunity to learn new therapies and expand one's knowledge base. However, it's crucial to approach internships with a discerning eye, as not all opportunities are created equal. In this blog post, we will explore the do's and don'ts when deciding on a psychology internship, with a specific focus on the importance of learning new therapies. Additionally, we will shed light on an example that highlights the potential drawbacks of internships that prioritize low cost over quality learning experiences.

The Do's:

  1. Research and Seek Variety: Look for internships that offer a diverse range of therapeutic modalities and approaches. Exposure to different therapies allows you to gain a well-rounded understanding of psychological interventions and equips you with a broader toolkit to address clients' needs effectively.

  2. Mentoring and Supervision: Prioritize internships that provide structured supervision and mentorship. Working closely with experienced professionals allows for guidance, feedback, and the opportunity to learn from their expertise. This support system enhances your growth as a psychologist-in-training.

  3. Practical Experience: Opt for internships that provide ample opportunities for hands-on experience. Engaging in direct client interactions under supervision helps you develop essential clinical skills, enhance your therapeutic abilities, and build confidence in your professional practice.

  4. Professional Networking: Look for internships that facilitate networking and collaboration with other mental health professionals. Building connections within the field opens doors to potential job opportunities, ongoing learning, and mentorship beyond the internship period.

The Don'ts:

  1. Don't Prioritize Cost Over Quality: Beware of internships that solely focus on low fees or charge exorbitant amounts without providing commensurate learning opportunities. While affordability is a factor to consider, compromising on quality training and mentorship can hinder your future career prospects.

  2. Don't Settle for a Certificate Mill: Be cautious of internships that offer certificates without providing substantial learning experiences. A mere certificate without proper training and skill development may not hold much value in the eyes of employers or licensing boards.

  3. Avoid Limited Exposure: Steer clear of internships that offer a limited scope of therapies or solely focus on a single approach. Limiting your exposure to only one modality may limit your professional versatility and the ability to adapt to diverse client needs.

  4. Avoid Bargaining: When you negotiate on the fee, you compromise not only on the quality but also the depth of knowledge you receive. Remember, the choices you make now shape the future trends of the industry you're entering.

Consider now this scenario of an intern who opts for a low-cost internship that promises a quick certificate but lacks substantive training and mentorship. This intern, although saving money in the short term, may find themselves ill-equipped to handle the complexities of real-world clinical practice. Without the necessary skills, confidence, and knowledge gained from a quality internship, they may struggle to secure future job opportunities or provide effective therapy to their clients. Investing in a comprehensive and reputable internship, even if it requires a higher financial commitment, is crucial for long-term professional growth and success.

Here is what a participant had to say about in our last Expressive Art Therapy Internship for psychology student:

Love love love it!!

With so much going on with college and just life this was like sun on a rainy day...it didn't end the rain but it definitely brought along a rainbow!

Before joining I was a bit skeptical how it is going to be? Will I learn anything or is it just another internship in which you just get a certificate at the end. But it wasn't.

It was much better than I had expected, I am not one of the people who can share what they are feeling or thinking in front of a bunch of people yet I was able to communicate 'cause everyone there made it possible.

Everyone made it a safe place. I learned a lot, using art as a therapeutic tool, showing unconditional positive regard, listening to the client and actually making them feel heard.

Loved being on both side of a therapy session, being the client was very enlightening it helped me understand the clients perspective and generated a lot more empathy in me towards them. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.

We want this for all future psychologists, whether you join us or someone else for an internship, if you aren't having experiences like these, then there is a need find better places to learn from.

Choose psychology internships that prioritizes teaching new therapies to aspiring psychologists. By following the do's and avoiding the don'ts, you can ensure a valuable and enriching experience. Remember to research, seek variety, prioritize mentorship, gain practical experience, and cultivate professional networks. Additionally, be cautious of internships that prioritize low cost over quality training, as they may hinder your future career prospects. By investing wisely in your education and training, you lay a strong foundation for a successful career as a psychologist.

Wishing you the very best for your career!
